Maya Grab – Text Adventure for the Commodore 64

project started: 01.02.2016, status: finished on 16.03.2016, blog: Maya Grab – development journal

Maya Grab is a text adventure game for the Commodore 64, developed by Thomas Langenkamp and published by a german digital magazine Input-64 (Issue 7/1986). The player needs to find the treasure of Maya which is hidden very close; closer than you think. The game begins in a house.

It’s written in BASIC and recompiled to prevent seeing the actual listing and solution for the game. The game features PETSCII graphics, with some additional help with sprites, a very basic command interpreter and no music or sound effects (except when typing). The whole game is also not so complex, it consists of 15 rooms, and the tricky stuff is achieved by doing right things in right rooms at specific time.

Laser Squad – Scenario editor

project started: 10.12.2014, status: active

Laser Squad scenario editor is meant to be a powerful tool for creating and expanding scenarios, or single assets from scenarios, for our upcoming remake of Julian Gollop’s original Laser Squad. The editor is in a early phase and will be further developed while the Laser Squad project is currently on pause.

Flappy Beard

project started: 23.06.2014, status: finished on 29.06.2014, blog: Flappy Beard – development journal

Flappy Bird is a 2d side scrolling game created by a Vietnam developer Dong Nguyen. The goal of the game is to fly a bird between pipes without touching them. The game was a huge success because of it’s simplicity and was very addictive. Nguyen said that he developed the game in a couple of days using graphics from his previously cancelled game. Several months after it’s release Nguyen announced the removal of the game from both Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Soon after clones of the original game emerged on both app stores, some containing the same graphics, some containing polished graphics but same or similar gameplay.

Flappy Bird is probably the new “Hello world” for games, so why not make another clone for Android – in only 24 (twenty four) hours. You’re all invited to read the development journal.

Laser Squad

project started: 26.09.2013, status: active, blog: Laser Squad – development journal

Laser Squad is a game created by Julian Gollop from Target Games in late eighties originally for the 8 bit home computers. It brought a complete new genre to the game industry – turn based strategy. It was a solid base for several other successful games and franchises like “UFO – Enemy Unknown”, “Jagged Alliance”… etc.

The goal of the game is to lead a squad through a map and complete objectives given for each scenario by using specific tactics and equipment. Each scenario can be also completed simply by eliminating all enemy units. The game introduced Action Points (AP) which are calculated for every unit on every turn taking into account several parameters like unit’s strength, stamina, encumbrance… The AP’s can be then used every turn to move, fire or interact with other objects on the map. Only if you carefully read the game manual, you’ll realize how detailed the game was and which all parameters are used to calculate every action the unit takes in the game.

With all these facts, the pros of this remake are self-explanatory:
– with good design and game mechanics you practically have a unlimited expandable game
– with good level editor you can allow players to build their own scenarios
– very powerful multiplayer component
